I’d like to pretend it’s all original, but if you believe me, that just means I’ve been sufficiently clever in hiding my sources. I allow myself to be inspired by all sorts of things, but I try to mix and match and put my own twists on ideas, so that I’m not taking too much from any one source.

The setting in the novel I’m always plugging is basically a genericised version of mediaeval Europe. People praise the unusual magic system, but if this was a science fiction novel instead, you’d say straight away, “Oh, that’s just bog standard psychic powers – boooooring!”
